Darkstalkers The Darkstalkers series began in 1994 when Vampire: The Night Warriors was released in Japan. Other regions would sport the same game, only with some sound effects and voices removed and a slight name change from Vampire to Darkstalkers. Darkstalkers was the first of Capcom's fighting games to incorporate Air Blocking, Dashing, Throw Escapes, Throw Misses. However, the two most notable advents were those of Chain Style Combos, accomplished with mere button taps, a style that would later be used in Capcom's popular Marvel line of games, and the then revolutionary Anime Style that would influence later games, like Street Fighter Alpha/Zero. Night Warriors Less than a year later, Capcom released the sequel to the Vampire series, Vampire Hunter: Darkstalkers Revenge, or Night Warriors in the States. However, this game felt like less of a sequel and more like a slight upgrade from the previous game. Although Night Warriors had recycled animations and backgrounds with color palette swaps, it featured remixed music compositions and made the two bosses from the previous game playable in addition to bringing two new characters in the fold. So far as game mechanics went, Night Warriors saw the addition of Pursuit Attacks used to hit opponents already on the floor. Vampire Savior Three years after Night Warriors, the long awaited next installment of the Vampire series was released: Vampire Savior: The Lord of the Vampire, also released under with the alternate subtitles Jedah's Damnation and World of Darkness. It also made its way on to the Playstation as Darkstalkers 3. Vampire Savior saw the removal of the less popular characters Pyron, Phobos, and Donovan and the addition of four new fighters: Jedaj, Q-Bee, Lilith, and Bulleta. Although fans had long anticipated the sequel, Vampire Savior somehow felt rushed and incomplete, something that probably help to spurn latter pseudo-sequels Vampire Hunter 2 and Vampire Savior 2. In the third Vampire game, battles were fought during one continuous round with a momentary break in play using an Impact Damage Gauge that allowed for life recovery during play. Vampire Savior also introduced the Dark Force, a mode where, once activated, caused your character to execute a specific action for a limited time. Vampire Hunter 2 Shortly after the release of Vampire Savior, Capcom released two pseudo-sequels to the Vampire franches: Vampire Hunter 2 and Vampire Savior 2. Both games used Vampire Savior as a template, re-using graphics and music found in the third release, but removed aerial chains from the game as well as character specific endings. The only major difference between Vampire Hunter 2 and Vampire Savior 2 lies in the cast. The characters available in Vampire Savior 2 are identical to those in Vampire Savior and Vampire Hunter 2 saw only appearances from members of Vampire Hunter. It is a wonder why Capcom never released an Arcade Game that saw both sets of characters combined together in one game.
